Counting the Days ... .

August 8, 2006 / by Irishstew

Well, I will be retiring in four more days. Next Monday is my last full day of working here at the university. I started here 18 years ago only to get tuition remission for my children so that they could get a college education. I knew I would scrub floors if that was the only job opening.

However, I was hired to work in the Financial Aid Department and I stayed there for about a year and a half until my boss at the time did not accept my application to move into a different position. He told me I was doing too good of a job where I was. Well, that just didn't sit well with me so I applied for a job in another department. That other department happened to be philosophy.

I have been in the PL Dept. for about 16 years. Although I love working with students and the professors lead lives that are more exciting then all the soaps on TV, I was bored for the whole time. I was the secretary, administrative assistant, office manager, etc. and there still was not enough work for me especially through the long months of summer.

I could write a book regarding the happenings in the PL Dept. if I had the confidence in my writing skills. But then again, I would be divulging many of the things I was told in confidence and that would not be good. I suppose I could change all the names.......

Enjoy your well-earned retirement! I just retired almost 2 years ago and, altho' I had an active and successful professional career, I haven't missed it at all. Retirement is a new phase of life that can be extremely rewarding. By the way, as an undergraduate student, I minored in philosophy and your description of the philosophy profs as leading exciting lives sort of surprised me. I must have had my nose buried too deep into my books to have noticed all the excitement... [SMILE]

Wow, Irish.. Congratulations..!!!!!! Your are retiring, and me, at my 46, am just beginning..! Well, we are all called to different things, I guess. I'd love to hear you telling some stories about this "particular race" of philosophers.. I like philosophers !!! Well, I think I like many many things.. But I understand what you mean by getting bored doing the same thing during so many years.. Time to enjoy your new free life now..! Good luck these last few days, gab[HEART]

I must correct myself.. I've worked since I was 15 years old in Argentina, non stop, in the music fireld first, and then in the Autism field, until I came here, four years ago. I am beginning "here", and unfortunatelly, my "retirement" from Argentina, I'll never get it.. gab..

Your writing skills are fine! Give us the story! If people only knew the drama that goes on behind the scenes at a school! Please consider doing it. [SMILE] BTW--one of the BEST principals that I worked for also carried on an affair with one of the teachers in the building. The whole thing got really messy, but he was still the most competent boss I've ever had.

After having been married to a professor and being a teacher myself, I can well believe the stories that you could tell. Yes, you could change the names to protect the guilty. Go for it!! Happy Retirement!! It has been 4 years for me and I love the time to try new things. [THUMBUP]

    Hi IrishStew!

Welcome to your new venue of "freedom." I am sure it is well deserved afetr all those years of dedication and hard work. Realize it though, that many will look at you with some amount of envy because of your hard earned respite away from the trials and tribulations of the daily grind....
Others will also think...Another one's out to pasture...another liability.
Don't let that phase you one bit...We all get it...
Concentrate on you and your writing...Think about other blog spaces if writing is your favorite tune...You write good a lot better than most...The more you practice the better you'll get....[THUMBUP]

    Ayes...

PS...A new blogster and a good friend of mine...Anacoana has opened shop here at blogster...Life Love and Eternity....Just type in Anacoana in blogster's search box above...She has a lot of wisdom to share...Uplifting too..[COOL]

    Dear Irish,

How is this new life 'treating" you..? I have a very small book of "Irish blessings". Every time I read one, it reminds me of you. So yesterday, I wrote one down here, in Blogster, one that I dedicated to you, and to two other friends that are having a very tough situation.. No, I know your question.. I haven't called her.. I am too busy now, and,, well, still in a "recovering" process.. But I'm sure I will some day..

    With fondness, gab[SMILE][HEART]

PS: I also live now in a townhome with a view to a lake (a pond, I would say..)

I am only one, But still I am one. I cannot do everything, But still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

Education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army.
